When you've been losing so much for so long, it's easy to get complacent in the things that you're supposed to do every day in your profession — work hard.
It's not that you don't want to, but you get what I'm trying to say, things change, and it gets easier and easier to not do it the best you can every single time when you lose so much and are around losing vibes. And, I'm not saying that the Raiders are like that, but that could certainly be a thing.
They needed a winning coach and regime that knows how to win, and establishes a winning culture, because that bleeds over into preparation, especially offseason preparation. And, Pete Carroll, the new head coach and former Seattle Seahawks head coach, can already see a change with the Raiders since he first got there.
"I think work ethic, really," Pete Carroll told reporters at mandatory minicamp when asked about the biggest improvement so far. "I think the consistency in our work ethic. We came out of the OTA phase two, when you can only go so far, you can only do so much. Then, in phase three, we get to do a lot more against each other and work offense versus defense. And so they got to transfer phase one, phase two, to the final phase in this minicamp.
"But even with that, there's so much restraint on them. It's really hard to do this right, because like I said, you've got to use your imagination because you can't make the plays. So, sometimes we go a little bit too far. The league is aware of how we practice, because they know, and we had to stay within the guidelines, which we got done in good fashion."
Carroll won a Super Bowl with the Seahawks over AFC West division rival Denver Broncos, and went to another one, but unfortunately for him, lost to the New England Patriots, who were a dynasty at the time. So, he knows how to establish a winning culture and a winning work ethic.
And, it shouldn't be hard to establish that with the group when you have a guy like Maxx Crosby leading the charge, when you could probably say that no one works harder than that guy. But for that to be the one thing that Carroll has noticed has improved the most, it says a lot about what they're doing and how they're preparing for the huge season that is 2025.
