The Las Vegas Raiders may have unintentionally received bad news on Thursday, as their draft plans may now have to change a bit. We all know they need a quarterback, and we all know it's not going to be easy to get one of Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, or Drake Maye. Now, J.J. McCarthy has also worked his way up draft boards.

As things currently stand, it was looking like the Raiders would have to take a quarterback either at pick No. 13 or at pick No. 44 in the second round. I personally had them going Byron Murphy, the defensive tackle from Texas (before Christian Wilkins signed), at pick No. 13 and going Michael Penix, the Washington QB, at pick No. 44.

Now, all of that may have to change.

Obviously, with Christian Wilkins signing, the Raiders may go a different direction than defensive tackle with their first pick, or they may go with him if they can't find a guy they really like at a different position. As far as taking Penix in the second round, if that was ever a plan, they may have to scrap it because he could be going in the first round long before pick No. 44.

On Thursday, Washington held their pro day for the players who entered the 2024 NFL Draft. Penix is the most prominent of that bunch and is a guy that a lot of people like in that second tier of QBs. During his pro day, he put up some very impressive numbers that may have just launched his stock up the boards.

When Penix ran his 40-yard dash, several stop clocks with different times were used. The fastest one read 4.46, and the slowest one read 4.59. Either way, that's pretty fast for a quarterback who is not known for his running ability, as he is very much a pure pocket passer. Having those legs, though, which he probably didn't show enough, is going to help him a ton as a pro.

"I was only running one time to show I can run, and that's it. I was done," Penix told ESPN afterward.

Penix also finished with a 36-inch verticle, which is also pretty crazy for a quarterback, especially a guy of his size and build. He showed that he is athletic on Thursday and is much more than just a pocket passer. As it usually happens this time of year, Penix's draft stock will now rise, and people will overreact or react as they should. But this could cause the Raiders to change their draft plans.
