Many Las Vegas Raiders fans scratched their heads when the team claimed former New England Patriots cornerback Jack Jones off the waiver wire. A lot of people murmured to themselves, "I thought we were done with the 'Patriot way,'" probably, anyway.
And that is a fair assessment to have. The Raiders, under Josh McDaniels, signed any former Patriots player they could, for some odd reason. He was trying to recreate the teams he had that won the Super Bowl. However, as we all saw firsthand, that is just not how it works.
Why would AP bring in a former Patriots player after he said it would be the "Raider way" from now on? All of those are good questions; however, this signing was definitely warranted.
Pierce has known Jack Jones since he was 12 years old. The relationship was already there, and the talent was definitely there, as he was a fourth-round pick in 2022. So, he is also still extremely young. Besides the connection, though, AP brought him in for other reasons.
"Yeah, somebody that gains depth for us in the back end, competition in the back end as well," Pierce told the media on Wednesday. "A guy who can make plays on the ball. Again, it's just competition. If there are players out there that can help our team overall, we'll pick them up regardless of where they're from."
Jones is guy who is still very raw. This was a low-risk-high-reward kind of deal. They claimed him off the waivers for very cheap, and he has the potential to be a start, possibly even more.
Jones will likely be on the field a bit on Sunday, too, as he knows Miami pretty well, having played them twice last year and once this year. This was a great move by Champ Kelly and Antonio Pierce.
