A few weeks ago, the Las Vegas Raiders placed a claim in the waiver wire for cornerback Jack Jones, who has since become one of the better defensive backs on the roster. It was a low-risk, high-reward move, and the reward was high on Thursday Night Football as Jones played his best game of the season.

But Jones was brought in for two reasons: The defensive back position needed a ton of help, especially with the injuries and the release of Marcus Peters. Secondly, the Raiders had a prior relationship there between Jones and interim head coach Antonio Pierce.

The two were together in high school when Pierce was coaching Jones at Long Beach Poly High School. Then, when Antonio Pierce became the defensive coordinator at Arizona State University, Jones went to school there, too.

Jones was a fourth-round pick in 2022 by the New England Patriots, and it's obvious that the fit wasn't right for him. So, now he is back with Pierce, and it just feels right.

"He's damn near a father figure from high school to now. He's a very big piece of my life," Jack Jones said on his relationship with Raiders Pierce.

Sometimes, having a relationship like that with your head coach is good. And hey, Pierce feels the exact same way.

"He's always been a wild card," Pierce started to get emotional. "He's a very good football player. The kid does it with a smile. He loves football. "Football means a lot to Jack. Football was a way for him to get out of the hood, to be honest. He used those resources to benefit his life and his family. Went to ASU, got him a degree. He's a father, a good man."

It's clear the two have a lot of love for one another, and it's clear that the Raiders made the correct move to go out and get Jones. His one-handed pick-six on Thursday was one of the best plays you will ever see. Sure, he is a former Patriots player, and we have moved on from that phase of the Raiders, but this one is just different.
