The Las Vegas Raiders have already undergone some major changes this offseason, and really, the offseason hasn't even started yet. There is still a Super Bowl to be played between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. However, the Raiders have not slowed down when it comes to checking things off of their offseason to-do list.
First was to find a general manager and then a head coach. They did that with John Spytek, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant general manager, and Pete Carroll, the former Super Bowl-winning head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. Now, it's time to find out who their staff would be.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Raiders elected to bring back special teams coordinator Tom McMahon, which was a great decision because it provides some continuity when there hasn't been much of that in the last four years. And, he's a good coach who coaches an above-average special teams unit.
Then, just minutes ago, we saw a report the Raiders were likely going to bring back another familiar face.
According to Josina Anderson, the Raiders are working on a deal with former defensive coordinator of the last few years, Patrick Graham, to bring him back and to coach under Pete Carroll, a defensive mastermind.
Over two of the last three years, the Raiders have had a top-ten defensive unit under Patrick Graham, and in 2023 you could make a case they had a top-five defense. He's great at what he does, and while he should have been rewarded a head coaching position, as he did interview for a few, the Raiders are lucky he didn't get one, because now he can come back.
This is the best decision they could have made with this position on the staff. They bring in another guy to provide some continuity, it seems like they may not have to install a whole new defensive scheme unless Pete Carroll wants his own, and he's a players coach with these exact same players.
If this does end up happening, this is a great hire.

The Raiders will need that, too.
