Finding that perfect head coach is much easier said than done. That's why the Las Vegas Raiders are looking for their sixth head coach since Mark Davis took over for his father, the legendary Al Davis. Antonio Pierce just wasn't getting the job done, and with new minority owner Tom Brady calling the shots, it was time for a change.
So, here they are, looking for another head coach. But, like we have said the last two times, this one has to be right. They have given the last two head coaches just a year and a half to show they can do something, which many would argue is not enough time. But, that's how they want to do things. They really can't afford to do that again with this head coach.
They have a list of about seven head coaches they want to interview, with the favorite currently seeming like it's Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Robert Saleh. And, while we haven't heard anything heat up with this name, it's important to know that they will be busy interviewing a coach on Thursday.
Raiders interviewing Robert Saleh on Thursday
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Raiders are interviewing the former New York Jets head coach on Thursday.
Robert Saleh's journey in the NFL as a coach started in 2005 with the Houston Texans, where he initially served as a defensive intern. He advanced quickly, becoming a defensive assistant and then an assistant linebackers coach under Gary Kubiak until 2010. After that, he moved to the Seattle Seahawks, where he was a defensive quality control coach from 2011 to 2013, playing a part in their legendary "Legion of Boom" defense and winning Super Bowl XLVIII.
Post-Seahawks, Saleh transitioned to the Jacksonville Jaguars as a linebackers coach from 2014 to 2016, until a coaching change saw him leave after Gus Bradley's dismissal. In 2017, he joined the San Francisco 49ers as their defensive coordinator, working under Kyle Shanahan.
His successful run with the 49ers paved the way for him to serve as head coach of the New York Jets in 2021, where he became the first Muslim head coach in NFL history. However, his tenure ended in October 2024 after a rough start with a 2-3 record, concluding with an overall record of 20-36. Following his time with the Jets, Saleh took on a brief role as an offensive consultant for the Green Bay Packers later this year in 2024.
Now, I doubt he gets the job, but the Raiders will be busy interviewing a guy who certainly deserves to be a head coach somewhere.
