Being a Las Vegas Raiders player or coach is different than being an employee of any other team in the NFL — Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, Pittsburgh Steelers — any team. It just means more, and sure, the recent success isn't there and hasn't been there in 20 years, but the franchise is iconic, and still stands for something special.

That's why they have the catchphrases they do, the reason every time there is a new player or coach and they do their first press conference, they always mention how special it feels to be in the building, and things of that nature.

The Raiders are trying to bring back the successful part of the equation here, the part that allows them to say that it means something to be a Raider much louder than they are already saying it. They are doing that by hiring guys like Pete Carroll, the former Seattle Seahawks head coach, and John Spytek, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant general manager.

And they are doing it by bringing it guys under them that understand what it means to be a Raider. They recently hired offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, and he's already got it all down.

"My coaching philosophy is now — just three words, Just Win, Baby," Kelly said in dramatic fashion on Wednesday.

The Raiders need that mentality. It doesn't matter how it gets done, as long as this team is winning football games, and important ones, too. They need to be getting to the playoffs and competing for wins in the postseason, something they haven't done in 20 years. And then once they do that, they need to be competing for Super Bowls, something they haven't done in 40 years.

Chip Kelly knows two things — he knows how to win, as he just won a National Championship with Ohio State, and he knows how to coach offense. This is a great fit.
