The Las Vegas Raiders have already played two preseason games due to getting in the Hall of Fame game this year with the Jaguars, and neither time did new head coach Josh McDaniels give anything away.
I guess you can say he gets that from Bill Belichick.
Against the Jaguars, we had no idea Josh Jacobs was going to play as much as he did. Jacobs had five carries for 30 yards against the Jaguars. Against the Minnesota Vikings, we didn't necessarily know who would start the game at quarterback. We did know that Stidham and Mullens would play but had no idea who would play what series.
On Thursday when McDaniels talked to the media, he left it a mystery if the starters would play this weekend against the Dolphins.
"We haven't said who our starters are," McDaniels told the media on Thursday. "We're still in a competition mode…in some cases, yeah, in some cases, probably not."
You can kind of guess what that means, as McDaniels is very good at coding things.
The starters playing would somewhat be a good thing. They need to eventually get in a groove of things. When I say the starters, I mean the main guys like Derek Carr, Davante Adams, Hunter Renfrow, Maxx Crosby, and Chandler Jones.
These guys need to knock some rust off, and they need to do it soon. Those guys have not had any real football action yet, and as much as you may think it helps, practice doesn't simulate real football situations.
If the Raiders want to compete in the division, they have to take that risk that other teams are taking by playing their best players.
