Raiders coach describes what's next for the safety tandem of Marcus Epps and Tre'Von Moehrig

The Las Vegas Raiders have a much better secondary than what people think. It's a unit that is young, and doesn't have a ton of success overall, but has guys that can flat-out play, are talented, and have chips on their shoulder. In 2024, we could see a much improved secondary than the one we saw last year, which was considered to be a league-average unit.
With the pieces they have added in Decamerion Richardson, Trey Taylor, and M.J. Devonshire, they can be pretty good. But, let's also not forget that guys like Jakorian Bennett are going to be more developed. Brandon Facyson is going to be healthy.
But one other thing people are forgetting is that the safety tandem of Marcus Epps and Tre'Von Moehrig will not only be more developed, but now they have a season under their belt together in the same defensive system. Together, that duo can be special, and the position coach knows that, too.
"The next step for them is just to continue to develop as communicators, to provide clarity for everybody that's on the field and just kind of taking the next step in regards to how they play ball and how we say, 'It's above the neck.' Some of the plays that they have an opportunity to make or put their teammates in positions to be able to make them, I think is really the next step for not only themselves but really for the rest of the defense as we go forward," safeties coach Gerald Alexander said recently.
For Tre'Von Moehrig, he struggled his first two seasons in the league. he was a pretty high pick under the old regime, so last season was a year where he really had to be good or his future was going to be uncertain. Going into training camp last offseason there were conversations about him needing to have the best training camp of anyone. And, he did.
Moehrig was great last season, and he really fed off of Marcus Epps, who was the veteran he always needed there. As for Epps, he was the safety that just always did the right thing. he never made many errors, and he never made many crazy plays. He was just consistent and sometimes you need that. It's safe to say that 2024 could be big for the two of them together, as both enter a contract season, too.
