One of the Las Vegas Raiders' unsung heroes from the Sunday Night Football win over the New York Jets continues to die record-breaking things, and it seems like no one is talking about it. No, it isn't Antonio Pierce, even though he has done one hell of a job as interim head coach.
There is no doubt in my mind that the Raiders' unsung hero is kicker Daniel Carlson, as he continues to make every kick, besides two on the year, and does it from a distance. On Sunday, he had a 54-yarder that he made look effortless.
We knew both kickers would be used a lot in this game because the offenses are poor. And because both defenses are good, the kickers would play a huge factor. Carlson did his job, and some on Sunday, which just so happened to be him either breaking records or adding his name to some crazy list.
Here is what the Raiders' PR team tweeted out during and after the game:
K Daniel Carlson connects on a 54-yard field goal to end the first half, finishing off an 8-play, 44-yard Raiders scoring drive. Carlson logged his longest field goal of the season and has now made 25-of-32 (78.1%) field goals of 50+ yards in his career. Carlson is one of two players in the NFL since 2000 to make 25+ 50-yarders or more within their first 88 career games, joining Justin Tucker (31). His 25 makes of 50+ yards are also tied for the fourth most in the NFL since 2018.
Being mentioned with Justin Tucker, who is likely the best kicker of all time, is pretty special. Carlson kicks 50+ yarders with ease, and the Raiders need him to continue to do that. As long as the offense looks stale at times, now that the Jets' defenses are good, they will need to rely on Carlson.
The good thing is they can rely on Carlson. First, Carlson is extremely reliable; he doesn't miss often and is very clutch. Second, the defense is good enough to get by by scoring three on some drives rather than seven. Carlson could be lining up to have another All-Pro season.
Raiders’ Daniel Carlson almost relived one of his worst nightmares vs. Packers
The Raiders’ defense was able to make up for it.
