The Las Vegas Raiders struggled in the first game of the year against the Los Angeles Chargers, as they lost. However, they beat themselves, the Chargers didn't beat them.
This offseason was one of the most important off-season's in Raider's history. The defense got one of the best pass rushers over the last decade or so in Chandler Jones.
Yeah, the defense struggled to stop Justin Herbert, but doesn't everyone?
They also got the best receiver in the league, who is also one of the best players in the league, and only made an amazing offense, that much better. We saw glimpses of that on Sunday.
The offensive game plan for most of the game revolved around getting the ball to Davante Adams. He was the team's only real offense on the day. However, you shouldn't worry about that. Even Adams knows.
“Every coverage you have, there’s something you can’t cover up," Adams told the media on Wednesday when asked about getting double covered. "If they want to double me or roll on me – that just opens up the run game or for someone else.”
As far as being covered in man-to-man, opposing teams probably shouldn't do that.
"Anytime I get man coverage, I'm excited about that. I hope they do that as much as possible."
During the game Adams made a Chargers defensive back look silly with one of his routes. He showed that he is indeed the best route runner in the league. On Wednesday he was asked about that route, and his answer couldn't have been better.
"I got a lot of good reaction from it," Adams told reporters. "A lot of people reached out, and I saw a lot of comments and stuff like that on social media. I'm thinking about the next time I'm going to do it.
"After you put it on tape one time, I forget about it usually, and then you move on to the next route. That's the expectation I have for myself. Especially when I get isolated like that, I expect to make the DB look like that … that's the standard."
Defensive backs will certainly be up to the challenge of trying to defend Adams 1-on-1. This is the NFL, where competition reigns supreme.
However, they better be careful when doing so. Adams isn't messing around, obviously.
This offense can be amazing, and I think everyone knows that. On Sunday, Adams had 17 targets and finished with 10 catches for 141 yards and one touchdown.
I think this year we could possibly see Adams get near 2,000 receiving yards, Just because of how good the offense can be. Yes, there are things to fix, but the offense will only evolve.
And Adams is right. Teams will double him/scheme ways to take away his game. But then you have to worry about Darren Waller and Hunter Renfrow.
