The Raiders could have been better at drafting the last few years. In fact, the Jon Gruden draft era is one of the worst we have seen in some time. But before that, ten years or so ago, they weren't bad in that area. In fact, they often times found steals.
ESPN recently ranked the biggest draft steals of the last decade, and the Raiders had someone make the cut. Not only did he make the cut, but Derek Carr was actually ranked fairly high. Here is what ESPN said about Carr at 24 on the list:
Drafted: No. 36 in 2014 (Las Vegas Raiders)
Career stats: 35,222 passing yards, 217 TDs, and 99 INTs in nine seasons.
The fourth QB selected in the 2014 class, Carr, slipped to the second round. He was dinged by evaluators who devalued the Fresno State offense (known to give a boost in passing stats) and put weight on the fact that he didn't face a highly-ranked defense during his senior season. Even so, Carr started right away as a rookie and went on to set franchise records in passing yards (35,222) and passing touchdowns (217). — Reid, ESPN
Here is where ESPN inadvertently made the Raiders look worse: Jimmy Garoppolo isn't on this list. Carr, the guy the Raiders just let walk after being the franchise quarterback for ten years, is one of the top 25 greatest draft steals in the last decade. If he was such a steal, why did they let him go?
Garoppolo's situation with the Raiders is getting better once we figure out his update with his injury, and even then, it still needs to be more sketchy. It was just a bad move overall, and they honestly should have kept Carr, especially when you look at a list like this one.
Davante Adams gives his honest opinion on the Raiders’ decision to bench Derek Carr
The Las Vegas Raiders' decision to bench quarterback Derek Carr has brought out a plethora of opinions. His future with the team is certainly up in the air. Accordingly, one this best friends and teammates is unsure about what will happen. Before this season, the Raiders traded for star wide receiver Davante Adams. Adams and […]
