The primary goal of the offseason for the Las Vegas Raiders is improving the defense.
The front seven was fairly impressive last season, but the area that needs the most improvement is the secondary.
Las Vegas is in win-now mode, and the organization is expected to be active in free agency. Though many expect the Raiders to bring in a quarterback, a recent article by Jonathon Macri of Pro Football Focus suggests that Las Vegas could be a preeminent destination for defensive free agents. Specifically, Las Vegas could land Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, who can play both safety and slot cornerback.
Pro Football Focus named Las Vegas as the top destination for Gardner-Johnson. Here is a look at their reasoning:
“The Raiders and Gardner-Johnson feel like a perfect match, not just stylistically, but because there is a need, as well. With the team cutting former first-round pick Johnathan Abram this season, and after having to rely on a near-32-year-old — and soon-to-be free agent — Duron Harmon for more than 1,000 defensive snaps, bringing in a young and productive defender like Gardner-Johnson should provide more life to the team’s secondary.
Gardner-Johnson’s six interceptions this past season was as many as the entire Raiders defense had all year. Pairing him with 2021 second-round pick Trevon Moehrig would create a stable safety duo for the next few seasons in Las Vegas.”
Las Vegas must get more playmaking in their secondary and no one makes more plays on the football than Gardner-Johnson. If the Raiders can pull it off, they would have a deeper and more dangerous defense next season.
