The 2024 offseason was going to be a very difficult one for the Las Vegas Raiders. They had to figure out if Aidan O'Connell was the quarterback of the future or if they needed to draft one. They still have to figure that part out, too.
They were also going to have to find a new general manager and head coach after firing Dave Ziegler and Josh McDaniels. Some of those crucial offseason tasks got easier, and let me just say, it is not the one regarding the future quarterback.
Aidan O'Connell started the game well. His first quarter wasn't terrible. However, he did not have a completion after the first quarter. The rest of the game was won by the defense, who played their tails off by scoring two touchdowns and allowing a Kansas City Chiefs team to score just 14.
The task that got easier was where to look for their next head coach. After Christmas Day, it's pretty evident that the Raiders just have to look right in front of them. Everything that happened on Monday is the reason why Antonio Pierce, the current interim head coach, should get the job in 2024.
Not only did Pierce completely change the culture of the Raiders back to what it should be, but he also changed the way the team was playing. They have been a much better team since Pierce took over in Week 9, and the defense, which was supposed to be the weak link, has been one of the best in the league.
Since Pierce has taken over, the Raiders have allowed just 15 points per game, an elite number by all means. Not only has the identity of the team changed, though, but the Raiders just beat the Chiefs, something they haven't done since Jon Gruden was the head coach. Not to mention, the Raiders have passed their 2022 wins total.
All of that alone should be enough to get the job. Now, there are still two more games left in the season, and a lot can happen between now and then, but if you ask me, the job is Pierce's to lose.
Raiders proving to have an elite defense by one league-leading statistic
The Raiders defense has been outstanding.
