A few days after firing head coach Antonio Pierce, the Las Vegas Raiders made it known they wanted a reset at the general manager position as well. They fired Tom Telesco, and are now in business for a new general manager. But, hiring a general manager before a head coach can sometimes be tricky, because the head coach may be the guy who's more important to the team's immediate success, and that head coach may not like the GM in place.
But, you could also flip that on its head and go the same direction with hiring a head coach before a GM. Either way, it's obvious the Raiders need both positions, and they need them as fast as possible. And, they need the right guys.
Luckily, new minority owner Tom Brady, who has been making some of these moves, has a name in mind for the open GM position.
Raiders to interview John Spytek
In 2022 when the Raiders needed a new general manager, but brought in Dave Ziegler, they interviewed now Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant GM John Spytek. Now, they are interviewing him again.
Spytek serves as the Assistant General Manager for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a position he was promoted to in 2023. His career in the NFL kicked off in 2004 with an internship in the operations department for the Detroit Lions. He then transitioned to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2005, working his way up from a pro personnel intern to a college/pro scout.
After serving as the Director of College Scouting for the Cleveland Browns from 2010 to 2012, Spytek moved to the Denver Broncos in 2013, initially as a Southwest area scout and later as a national scout, contributing to their Super Bowl 50 win.
Since joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2016 as the Director of Player Personnel, Spytek has been instrumental to the team's success, which includes four straight NFC South championships and a Super Bowl win in 2020.
He manages the daily operations of both the college and pro scouting departments, prepares for free agency, and scouts talent from various leagues, significantly shaping the team's competitive edge under General Manager Jason Licht.
He has been interviewed by teams like the Tennessee Titans and now the Las Vegas Raiders, where his long-standing relationship with Tom Brady, now a minority owner of the Raiders, is a huge deal in this hiring process.
Las Vegas Raiders will have a busy Thursday on their hands when it comes to their search for a head coach
The Raiders have one lined up.
