The Las Vegas Raiders and their entire fan base watched Sunday night with the greatest of intentions — to root for the Philadelphia Eagles as they beat down the Kansas City Chiefs. If you're a fan of the Raiders or work for the team, or even cover them, there's a very high chance you were not ready to witness the history of a three-peat happening.
Maybe if it was any other team not in the AFC West, Raiders fans and media would root for that team to win and finish the three-peat. But, it's the Chiefs, the most hated team in the league, and the Raiders' biggest rival of all.
The Raiders enjoyed what they saw on Sunday night, because not only did they get to see the Chiefs lose, they got to see them get their tails kicked, which ultimately showed the Raiders if they were paying attention, how to beat the Chiefs. And, that's important, too, because the Chiefs run the AFC West, at least they have for the last seven or eight years.
If the Raiders want back in the postseason, and they want a chance to win their first playoff game in over 20 years, they have to construct their team to beat the Chiefs, and the Eagles just showed everyone the perfect way to do so.
Eagles show Raiders how to beat Chiefs
The Eagles beat up on Patrick Mahomes. It was very similar to what the Tampa Bay Buccaneers did in the Super Bowl to him a few years ago. They sent four all game long, didn't blitz, just let their corners cover well, and the pressure generated from the front four was so good that Mahomes got the yips, several times.
So what you have to do is really build up your team in the trenches, on both sides, because even the Eagles offensive line stopped the Chiefs defensive line, which is a good defensive line believe it or not.
The Raiders already have part of the first equation done with the defensive line. They have Maxx Crosby and Christian Wilkins. They really need Tyree Wilson to start to develop into a legit problem, or Malcolm Koonce, who is a free agent, to come back better than he was before.
Then they need another great defensive tackle next to Wilkins. All of this could be done through the draft for all we know.
They have part of the offensive line in this equation done, too. JPJ, or Jackson Powers-Johnson looks like a legit center in the NFL. Kolton Miller is great at his position, for at least another year or two, and D.J. Glaze looks like he can develop into something special.
This draft and free agency can really change the way this team is viewed, and how the compete within the division.
