Raiders’ latest move proves that Pete Carroll may not make the tough decision that fans are begging for after recent frustrating loss
The Raiders are making a change – but not one that fans want desperately.
The Las Vegas Raiders are a team who have been on the brink of multiple important victories this season. Instead of finding ways to win those matchups, they have come up just short. Now, changes are imminent for the staff, even if fans are not getting quite what they want yet.
Raiders fire special teams coordinator amid game-changing struggles
HC Pete Carroll and GM John Spytek have made the decision to fire special teams coordinator Tom McMahon, who was a Josh McDaniels hire in 2022. McMahon stuck around on staff once Carroll joined the organization because of special teams success in recent seasons.
That success hasn’t translated to this season, though. In Carroll’s first season as the head coach, McMahon’s group has made massive errors that have led to scores from their opponent or a disadvantage for the Raiders offense, who have not impressed in their own right.
A move that fans are clamoring for may not happen
This decision by the Raiders points to a confidence to make a staff change, but it is not the firing that fans have pushed for this season is for the offensive line coach in Vegas. Brennan Carroll is the current OL coach for the Raiders, so his bloodline connection to the head coach could keep him on staff further than some of the other assistants.
“Pete Carroll and John Spytek decided to fire special teams coordinator Tom McMahon, who was a Josh McDaniels hire in 2022. When assembling his staff this offseason, Carroll decided he wanted to keep McMahon, likely because the special teams had been stellar the few years prior. When you look at this 2-7 team, which could be the worst in the NFL, it’s easy to say they could be 5-4. They had a blocked field goal in Week 4 vs. the Chicago Bears, and they lost that game by one point. That blocked field goal was actually for the win, but they ended up losing, obviously. There is also the missed extra point in Week 9 vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars, in which the Jags won in overtime by one point. And, there is the blocked punt and missed game-tying field goal attempt vs. the Denver Broncos on Thursday Night Football.
This firing was a bit fair. And, we could see more like these happen with the raiders, as we know the offensive line just isn’t good, and the offensive playcalling has been a bit bad. However, the offensive line is coached by his son, so maybe we don’t see that move, one that needs to happen, end up happening.” — Justin Churchill, A to Z Sports
