The Las Vegas Raiders have a long history of winning, and while they also have a long history of losing in the last 20 years, they are used to be the most feared team in all of the NFL. Back in the day, they were considered the best of the best, and a team that some would call a dynasty because of how dominant they were overall.
The Raiders have also had some very dominant players throughout that time. And, those players and those teams did whatever it took to win, no matter what it was. In terms of injuries and playing through them, well, they definitely did whatever they had to do, and there are plenty of examples to show for it, too.
If you ask Tim Brown, one of the greatest wide receivers ever, for some stories of the team doing whatever it took to win, he would share some pretty crazy stuff.
"My dad had a philosophy in life: if you can get out of bed, you can go to work," Brown said on the Jim Rome Show. "And if you can go to work, you can do work. That was sort of my philosophy, man. I think the craziest story was, I allowed the Raiders training staff to tape a bicycle inter-tube to my butt and to my calf to act as my hamstring. I caught a 65-yard touchdown in that game. I mean, stuff like that that you did and look back and go 'Maybe that wasn't the smartest thing I did.' But you do it for your team. And I really credit my dad for that attitude.
"It literally made sense. What they did is they would say 'Look, your hamstring is not torn, it's strained. We are going to tape this interlude to your calf and butt and it will take the place of your hamstring. The thing works, no doubt, but only for a while. I came out of the game in the third quarter, because that was all I could take. You know, doing stuff like that maybe didn't make the most sense in the world but you do what you have to do to play."
That era of football is one of the best, if not the best, mainly because of the show they put on, while always making sure that they played if they could walk. You never had to worry about not seeing your favorite player sit out because of contract issues or a stubbed toe. Obviously, I'm being facetious, but that's certainly what it feels like.
Brown was a monster, and we knew he had a crazy mentality and drive to be the best, but we didn't know it as much to that extent. That's why he is one of the best of all time.
