One of the biggest controversies in the last few years in the NFL has been the roughing of the passer call. It's safe to say there aren't many defenders who are in favor of the way the rule has been treated. Even Maxx Crosby on the Las Vegas Raiders hates the rule because, of course, he loves hitting the quarterback.
Last Sunday, even with all the issues he went through, Crosby got his hit on Patrick Mahomes. However, that came with a loss. I'm sure he would rather have the win than the sack.
Either way, Crosby got to hit one of his biggest rivals, and he was fortunate enough it didn't get called as a roughing the passer; even if it wasn't even close, it seems to be happening a lot, which is exactly why it's his least favorite rule in the NFL.
"Can't be a rule with gray area, you know what I mean? I feel like if there's a rule; it's black and white: you either sack the quarterback or you don't; you can't sack the quarterback and say, oh well, he landed on him too hard," Crosby said on his podcast. "I won't go too hard on it because I'm not trying to have them come after me. I mean, if it's egregious, like late, and you're slamming the dude on his head like, ok, I get it."
Crosby is very right. However, let's remember, last season, they had a bad roughing of the passer called on the Kansas City Chiefs when Chris Jones hit Derek Carr. Even Carr thought it was a clean sack at the time, as Jones stripped the ball at the same time, too.
The rule overall is dumb. It's not the same sport anymore, and it's for the better in terms of players staying healthy, but sometimes some of the calls are just downright silly.
