The Raiders got their guy, and no surprise, it happened because of one thing, and I think most of us know how.
This offseason has been crazy for Las Vegas. They have spent money and a lot of it. But, they did it by getting who they want, not just getting guys that are good. These guys fit their scheme and their system.
That's a huge reason why Dave Ziegler and Josh McDaniels went and got Jimmy Garoppolo rather than any other quarterback. That's also a huge reason he chose the Raiders over other suitors.
"A big role, big role. I think just knowing the offense, obviously, it's evolved from the last time I was in it," Garoppolo said on Upon Further Review. "But knowing how Josh Calls plays, how he teaches things.
"And there's a couple of the coaches on the staff too that I've known from the past, all that kind of came into play and whenever you get an opportunity, you know, Josh is a phenomenal play caller, one of the best in the league, I think. And whenever you get that opportunity to join a guy like that, you got to take it."
The Raiders may not have all the weapons they did last year when it comes to Derek Carr, Darren Waller, and possibly Hunter Renfrow, but they now have guys that can run the offense. I don't think we could have said that about the guys last season.
I think when we try and picture what this offense could look like with a guy who knows how to run it, we can look at the last two games with Jarrett Stidham. He played great, and the offense gelled. But, I will say, while Garoppolo isn't the best quarterback in the world, he is certainly better than Stidham.
This regime has made an effort to get guys that know how to play in this scheme and play in this offense. Jimmy Garoppolo knows how to do that, and some.
