The Las Vegas Raiders move in the draft may come back to make them look like geniuses.
When the draft board was falling the way it was, where the three quarterbacks they liked went into the top four, we knew from then on they would be going with defense with their first pick. They weren't interested in Will Levis, but they were interested in Tyree Wilson.
A lot of fans don't like the pick, but then again you can't make everyone happy in fandom. But, based on some Next Gen Stats that came out, they could end up looking like geniuses with this pick. Wilson could turn out to be more than the real deal.
According to Next Gen Stats and the NGS Draft Model, "Wilson has the 6th-highest chance to make a Pro Bowl in his first three seasons among edge defender prospects over the last decade (48%). Wilson should help improve a Raiders pass rush that generated the 4th-lowest pressure rate (24.5%) and 3rd-lowest sack rate (4.4%) in the NFL last season."
If what these advanced stats and research are saying comes true, this was more than the right pick. Drafting Tyree Wilson was the perfect pick. But, of course, we still have to see how everything pans out. This pick could end up going horribly wrong. Of course, the foot procedure he had not long ago could turn out to haunt him.
The Raiders were cautious with the issue though. They did their due diligence with asking him all of the right questions, and everything a team needs to do before they draft a player.
Wilson is going to be replacing Jones soon, and it could even happen this upcoming season. Jones was very underwhelming last year. After having 10 sacks the year before with Arizona, he barely had four this year and was nearly non-existent the whole season.
But that could have been an anomaly. If you ask me, Jones will start the season, and Wilson will play that EDGE 3 role, the third guy that doesn't start but still gets a ton of reps. As soon as the Raiders realize Wilson is better, I think he starts. As sad as it is, Jones just doesn't have it anymore, and that's okay. But the Raiders need to progress as much as possible towards winning football, and that's going to happen with Wilson as the second guy on defense.
