It feels like the Las Vegas Raiders are eager to hire Ben Johnson as their head coach, following his success as the Detroit Lions' offensive coordinator since 2022. Johnson has dramatically improved the Lions' offense, helping them rank among the NFL's best, including leading the league in scoring in 2024. After firing Antonio Pierce and Tom Telesco, the Raiders see Johnson's innovative schemes and positive culture-building as key assets. And let me tell you, they have to get this one right.
Tom Brady, a now-minority owner, has played a significant role by endorsing Johnson and urging him to consider the job. Despite competition from teams like the Chicago Bears, and the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Raiders are very interested in securing Johnson, and making him the future of the franchise.
But, there is now new competition to go against in the sweepstakes of landing what appears to be the most coveted candidate.
Raiders have new competition for Ben Johnson in Cowboys
On Monday, the Dallas Cowboys decided that they could not come to an agreement with Mike McCarthy on a new deal for him to remain the head coach. So, they let his contract play out, which ends on Tuesday, and that also means that they are now in the business of a new head coach.
And, it's the Dallas Cowboys — you can hate them all you want, but you cannot deny the brand that they are. They are "America's team," and the biggest market in the NFL. So, this has instantly become a team that could steal Johnson away from Las Vegas.
We won't know what decision Johnson will make until his team is eliminated from the postseason, or until he wins the Super Bowl if that is what ends up happening.
So, we likely still have a bit of time left to find that out, that is, unless the Raiders hire someone else beforehand, someone who isn't currently in the postseason.
