The Las Vegas Raiders have been incredibly active this offseason, demonstrating their commitment to building a playoff-worthy team. Despite falling short by a game or two last season, their performance in 2023 significantly improved over 2022. Now, under the leadership of Dave Ziegler and Josh McDaniels, the Raiders are striving to maintain this upward trajectory.
This offseason, the Raiders have shown their determination to become consistent contenders. Their numerous strategic moves are a testament to this. As a result, this offseason is brimming with exciting storylines. The Raiders' OTAs commenced last week and are set to resume this week on Tuesday and Wednesday, promising plenty of action for fans to follow.
Here are three storylines for fans to watch for Week 2 of OTAs:
Three Raiders storylines to watch in Week 2 of OTAs
QB Battle
Undoubtedly, the Raiders are embroiled in a significant position battle at camp, a topic that has captured everyone's attention. The burning question on every fan's mind: Who will be the quarterback in Week 1 of the 2024 season? The Raiders have two viable options. They can stick with Aidan O'Connell, who admirably led the team last year, considering the circumstances. Alternatively, they can opt for Gardner Minshew, a seasoned player with a proven track record. The outcome remains uncertain, adding an element of suspense to the team's offseason activities.
The job is O'Connell's to start, as Antonio Pierce has already told the media that what AOC did last year earns him the right to snaps as the starter in OTAs. But he also said that the job is up for grabs. Minshew could go for it.
However, there is another QB battle going on, too. We don't know who will get the starting job, and the one who doesn't will be the backup. But there is one other battle no one is talking about: the battle for the third quarterback on the roster between UDFA Carter Bradley and Anthony Brown Jr. The two of them are good young quarterbacks, but someone will end up on the practice squad.
Battle for CB2
The Raiders have a clear-cut cornerback on their roster, Jack Jones, who was a small move for a big payoff when Antonio Pierce begged the team to let him sign Jones off of the waiver wire. It turned out well, as Jones made big play after big play against both the Los Angeles Chargers and the Kansas City Chiefs.
But, with Nate Hobbs playing the nickel in Patrick Graham's defense, there is a battle going on this offseason for the second cornerback spot. Jakorian Bennett is no longer a rookie and could come into his own, showcasing the potential the team saw in him last year. Or, it could be the rookie this year in Decamerion Richardson, who was the most athletic cornerback in the draft. And let's not forget about Brandon Facyson, who's a veteran who has been a CB2 plenty of times. It's certainly a storyline to watch.
Right tackle battle
Thayer Munford will have the starting job until someone says otherwise because of what he has shown when it was his time to play. When Kolton Miller went down, he played a bit of left tackle but also played some right tackle while Jermaine Eluemunor went to the left side. Munford has never been the starting tackle for a full season, though.
On the other hand, the Raiders introduced DJ Glaze in the 2024 NFL Draft with their third-round pick, adding another layer of intrigue to the right tackle position. It's a battle of skills and versatility, with Glaze proving he can excel in various offensive line positions. The question of whether Glaze can outperform Munford, a player who has shown promise in his limited playing time, adds a thrilling dimension to the team's offseason dynamics.
