Smith is asking for something around $40 million per year on his new deal. And, that may seem like a ton of money, because it is, but that's just what the market is these days for a top-tier quarterback. Smith deserves around that for sure, but I have a feeling it's all of the other, extra stuff in his contract that is making the process take so long.
Maybe it's the guaranteed money he would like, or the incentives, or anything like that.
And, who knows, they me be at a difference in the years on the deal, too. They want a quarterback of the future, and they do believe that Smith can be that, but do they really want to give a 34-year-old quarterback a four-year deal, when his only success has come with the Seattle Seahawks?
There is an update on the deal, though, and where things stand. Well, I guess you could call it an update.
“We are working on it," head coach Pete Carroll said at the NFL Owners Meetings in West Palm Beach on Monday.
Smith has been through some tough stuff in his NFL career. He started as a second-round pick to the New York Jets and after trying out as a starter, he became a career backup with them, the New York Giants, Los Angeles Chargers, and even the Seahawks when he first got to town.
The bright side of this all, because there are definitely some questions around Smith and who the Raiders are getting, is that his best years have come with Carroll as his head coach, and they have a great relationship together.
Hopefully, the deal gets done soon, so the Raiders can get one big thing off of their plate.
