One player on the Las Vegas Raiders could contribute to a huge shift league-wide.
Josh Jacobs hasn't participated in any offseason workouts for the Raiders so far, but that's because he isn't signed at the moment. He and the Raiders are in contract negotiations for an extension, but the Raiders gave him the franchise tag. However, Jacobs has yet to sign the tag.
When he gets his extension, an NFL analyst thinks he, among a few other running backs, could reset the market for running backs. That would cause a shift in the league.
Josh Jacobs, Las Vegas Raiders: There is a stark difference between the two franchised-tagged backs not named Saquon Barkley. Jacobs has proven to be a workhorse, while Pollard has served exclusively in a committee. Jacobs won the rushing title with a career-high 1,653 yards and led the NFL with yards from scrimmage (2,053) last season. He broke 90 tackles on runs and had over 1,100 yards after contact, both top two in the NFL, according to PFF. –Anthony Holzman-Escareno, NFL.com
We know that the running back position is the most undervalued in the league. They take the most contact of any offensive player and carry a workload that other players simply can't. But that's why they are undervalued.
The shelf life of running backs today could be better, which is a big reason why we see guys like Dalvin Cook and Ezekiel Eliot being released. Their backups are younger, with fewer miles on them, and cheaper.
But what Jacobs did last season deserves a big contract. He is entering his fifth season and is clearly only getting better. He is a guy that has shown to do all three things well that running backs do on the field.
Jacobs could get a massive contract, resetting the league's market for the position. He, Saquon Barkley, and Jonathan Taylor are all expecting contracts soon and expecting to see a lot of money.
