The Las Vegas Raiders addressed a key roster need that has flown under the radar: depth and run-blocking ability at tight end. While Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer form the NFL’s most dynamic tight end duo, there was an unfilled gap beyond them.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports free agent Ian Thomas is re-signing with the Raiders on a one-year deal. He spent last season in Vegas after seven seasons with the Carolina Panthers.

Raiders re-signing TE Ian Thomas changes a bit of their draft plans on Day 3

The Raiders have many needs and enough draft capital to address them. Thomas’ signing handles one. In recent mocks, I had them taking a tight end late, not for catching, but for run blocking.

So, I have been mocking the Raiders to draft a blocking tight end, especially in Round 7 when most of their primary needs are addressed. I think there was a real chance they did that in the 2026 NFL Draft. Now, it feels like the only other tight end additions they make will be by way of Undrafted Free Agent Rookies. So, this does change the Raiders’ draft plans on Day 3.

Sports Info Solutions says Thomas had five blown blocks in 160 run-blocking snaps. That’s good, given he blocks bigger defensive linemen. Bowers and Mayer also had five, but in fewer attempts. There is a reason he played the most run blocking snaps of any tight end on the roster, despite being TE3. SIS also ranks Thomas eighth team-wide in run-blocking Points Added at 4.14.

This signing is perfect for what they needed, and the Raiders are bringing some continuity back. In these wide zone schemes, you really rely on tight ends in the run game more than you may expect. Thomas is the perfect addition for the price and what they needed.
