The Las Vegas Raiders definitely got the right pick after hearing what he said when he got drafted. He will fit in perfectly.
When the Las Vegas Raiders traded away Darren Waller in the offseason because he and Josh McDaniels couldn't get along, we all knew it meant they would sign one in free agency, and they did. But, it wasn't the talent level of player we thought.
The Raiders ended up singing Austin Hooper, who will now likely end up being the Raiders' backup tight end. Hooper has had some Pro Bowl seasons, but hasn't had over 500 receiving yards since 2019, and has plenty enough games to reach that mark. He just hasn't been good.
So, they decided to grab a tight end in the second round after going defense in the first round. They went after Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer, who many think is the best tight end in the draft.
He is the perfect fit for the Raiders. He reminds you of that old-school Raiders football, so much so, his latest quote will get Raiders fans fired up.
"I like to put people in the dirt, and I like to run people over."
If that doesn't scream badass, I don't know what does. He is a guy that isn't afraid to get his hands dirty in the run game as a blocker, which he is great at, and he isn't afraid to go over the middle and get laid out catching the ball.
This guy is everything the old-school Raiders' offense used to be back in the day. He will fit the McDaniels system great too, because of his ability to block. Waller couldn't block very well, so subbing in a guy who can only help the offense. Oh, and he is durable.
