Everyone who follows football knows the Las Vegas Raiders, formerly the Oakland Raiders, hate the San Francisco 49ers. The former Bay Area neighbors had somewhat of a cross-town rivalry or a cross-Bay rivalry, I guess you could say.
On Sunday, though, Raiders fans need to root for the Detroit Lions, which is obvious, but it has nothing to do with that rivalry. It has everything to do with the Raiders current offensive coordinator search.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Raiders requested an interview with 49ers assistant Klint Kubiak for their vacant offensive coordinator job.
Sources say he also has a slip from the Raiders, who might interview him early this week if the 49ers are out. Las Vegas is set to make an early decision this week either way.
Kubiak has been in the league for quite some time now, so the experience would be important for Antonio Pierce and his staff. Kubiak has only been an offensive coordinator for one season, which was in 2021 with the Minnesota Vikings.
The one bad side of his resume would have to be the 2022 season, where he was the pass game coordinator for the Denver Broncos, who had the worst offense and passing offense in the league.
However, he does have a hand in what the 49ers offense has done so far this season, which is one of the best, if not the best, offenses in football. This could be a very good hire for the Raiders if they do. But, in order to get him in the building for an interview and to do that quicker, they need the 49ers to lose.
If they don't lose, it will take even longer to interview him because he will be preparing for the Super Bowl. Either way, the Raiders fan base will want the 49ers to lose anyway.
Antonio Pierce to give veteran coach more prominent role on Raiders’ staff
Now the Raiders must build out their staff.
