The Las Vegas Raiders didn't need to go offense much in the 2023 NFL Draft, but, knowing Josh McDaniels is a guy who loves that side of the ball, they went offense with their first pick.

Somehow they were able to get the best tight end in the draft in the second round. Michael Mayer has displayed some of what he can do in training camp and a little bit in the first preseason game.

Against the Los Angeles Rams, though, he did something pretty crazy that no one really noticed.

Mayer wasn't drafted because he has incredible speed or crazy route running in college. He was drafted because he catches the ball when it's thrown to him, and he is a really good run blocker on the edge.

However, against the Rams, he showed some speed that's pretty crazy.

Nate Tice, a film analyst for The Athletic, was breaking down film and noticed a play where Mayer, a tight end, was lined up across from a cornerback and basically beat him down the field. The ball wasn't thrown his way, but he had the defender beat.

If Mayer can develop his speed, which is hard because you can't really teach speed and his route running, there is the potential to be an elite tight end. He showed that, even without catching the ball, last Saturday.
