The Las Vegas Raiders have figured out a big problem during training camp. It's a good problem to have, though.
The Raiders have too many good players at one position. As I said, it's a good problem to have, but it is a problem. The cornerback room is overflowing with talent, and it could create another problem within itself.
With a starter from last season being injured during the offseason, and some other players getting better, he could be forced out of his starting role. And that would be some bad news to receive, especially for a guy who just made it back to camp.
Raiders' Mullen could lose his job
Trayvon Mullen has shown so much potential. In his rookie year, he showed he was worthy of starting the 10 games he did. In 2020, Mullen only got better. Last year a toe injury held him back, and Mullen only played five games.
There was some suspicion this offseason about whether or not Mullen had surgery on the toe, and while we still don't know, we do know that he did rehab and returned to camp recently.
Mullen being out during camp put him behind and at a disadvantage. Some of the other guys are now further ahead of him in terms of being ready to go Week 1.
There have been recent reports from training camp that Amik Robertson, Anthony Averette, Darius Phillips, and Nate Hobbs have all had a pretty good camp. The notion is that Hobbs has somewhat earned a starting spot on the outside as a cornerback, and Phillips is currently in the process of earning a spot as the nickel cornerback. Of course, Rock Ya-Sin, who missed a small amount of camp, returned recently and has that other outside spot locked down.
Mullen will have to earn his reps back, that's just how it is. The guys that were once below him, have now earned their first team reps and are now above him. In other words, there is a possibility that Mullen may have lost his starting job come Week 1. He's expected to compete for a starting spot opposite Rock Ya-Sin, but there's definitely a chance the former starter may lose out on the competition.
Now there is also a possibility that Mullen could easily win those reps back. But as of right now, it isn't looking great from his perspective.
Either way, as a fan, it has to feel great knowing the defensive back room is so deep that position battles are going on as we speak.
