Tre’von Moehrig on how he can be better: 'I just focused on the details'
Las Vegas Raiders safety Tre’von Moehrig is ready to take steps forward in his third year with the team.
Tre'von Moehrig, the third-year Las Vegas Raiders safety, is trying to bounce back after his disappointing 2022 NFL season.
During his rookie year, Moehrig appeared set on a trajectory to be a reliable and long-standing defender for the Raiders. And then, during his second year, Moehrig regressed — drastically. His grade from Pro Football Focus dropped nearly 17 points, and his receiving yards allowed more than doubled from year-to-year.
There was no hiding for Moehrig, he needed to be better, and early in the offseason, he admitted so. During the Raiders' minicamp, reporters followed up with the safety to hear about his quest for improvement, where he explained that he focused on the minute details of his technique and approached practice with consistent effort.
"I just focused on the details," he said. " [I] Try to be technically sound. Just trying to practice my technique, just like every other position, trying to just get better every offseason.
“Really, just coming out every day in practice, coming in the film room every day just trying to learn something… Pick up something every day, whether it’s something small or a small detail. But really every year it’s just going to be getting better in every aspect of the game.”
In his third year, one focus for Moehrig is game film. Improvement can't come if he never knows what is going wrong. And so, during the downtime in the NFL schedule, the safety is choosing to watch the unsavory game tape, being brutally honest with himself, to be a better player in 2023.
“Yeah, over the years, as I said, just my third year just picking up more film. Just learning more concepts, just learning more football,” he said when asked if he’s been watching a lot of film over the last several months. “Being able to turn on that film and pinpoint some stuff that [I] didn’t know last year or the year before, it was a big deal. So, definitely watching more film.”
What Moehrig hopes the film sessions help him do on the field is create more turnovers. He has one career interception, which came in 2021. And he has yet to force a fumble in his career.
When he was in college, Moehrig was a turnover-producing threat on every down. He collected seven interceptions and two forced fumbles in 33 games. Success at the NFL level comes down to him finding sustainability as a turnover producer again.
“Really, it’s just being on the same page, the communication aspect of it,” he said of getting familiar with defensive coordinator Patrick Graham’s scheme. “I’ve said it before, at the end of the day, it’s all concepts.
“Just learning different concepts, learning different coaching schemes, how they want it done. But as I said, the biggest thing is just communication. …I’ve been feeling better, more confident just with myself within the defensive scheme. So, definitely trying to do that and get our hands on the football.”
If Moehrig plays well, channeling the time he has spent improving in the 2023 offseason, the Raiders can find defensive improvement from within instead of looking elsewhere for needed production a third-year safety can provide.
