The Las Vegas Raiders need their quarterback, and they thought that was going to be Geno Smith. If they didn’t think that, they wouldn’t have traded for Smith and then signed him to a new contract before playing a single snap in Silver and Black.

They quickly found out that they were greatly wrong. However, the Raiders are now being blamed for his poor play, which is a tad fair but not entirely fair. But being blamed for Smith’s bad season will help them get rid of him.

Teams are blaming the Raiders for Geno Smith playing badly

According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, multiple teams believe Smith was held back by the Raiders’ offensive system last season and are eager to see him released. If the Raiders part ways with Geno Smith, there will be interest.

Smith was one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL last season, leading the league with 17 interceptions. But the offensive system was indeed bad. Now, they’re trying to move on from Smith. They will have their franchise quarterback in Fernando Mendoza, so there’s no need for Smith anymore. Not to mention, he’s going to save the Raiders money. If they cut him before June 1, the Raiders will save $8 million. If they were to cut him next season before June 1, they would save nearly $40 million on next year’s salary cap.

So, now that the Raiders know teams still think highly of him, do they trade him for literally anything and try to get something back? Or, do they still cut him loose, saving $8 million? The Raiders seem to still be formulating a plan.

“Obviously, the contract predicates that a little bit. Klint and his staff are getting everything together, so we are going to spend some time here, and then get back to Vegas and kind of formulate a plan with everyone going forward,” Spytek said when asked at the NFL Draft Combine what the plan was for Smith.

Either way, the Raiders will be happy when Smith is playing elsewhere.
