Contentment doesn't always equal complacency.
And with Las Vegas Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels, his contentment with the running back room is a positive sign. It's a group that has a mixture of youth and veterans, who can each bring a different skill set and running style to the game.
There is little not to like.
"It's pretty interesting. There are some young guys that are learning but play really hard and give great effort,” McDaniels said. “We have some guys that are kind of multifaceted in terms of what they do and bring. And we've tried to give them all different opportunities here in the first few games to try to do some of those things.”
It starts with leadership
One of the reasons McDaniels feels confident in his running back group is because of the leadership of running backs coach Kennedy Polamalu.
“I really like the group," McDaniels said. "I think KP does a great job of coaching that group."
With a featured back like Josh Jacobs, and a supporting cast that includes Zamir White, Kenyan Drake, Ameer Abdullah and others, it's not surprising that McDaniels feels confident in what he can expect from his running backs.
In the Hall of Fame Game, White rushed 11 times for 52 yards and looked impressive. Jacobs also played in that game, rising for 30 yards and five carries.
Against the Minnesota Vikings, it was Brittain Brown who received the bulk of the workload. He carried the ball 14 times for 54 yards.
Las Vegas may have questions surrounding the offensive line and defensive line, but from the looks of it, the team is happy with what it's seen from the running back group thus far.
