The Las Vegas Raiders surprised many people earlier this week. They released veteran RB Kenyan Drake. It will cost the Raiders a total of $8 million in dead cap. The Raiders signed him to a three-year deal last year.
Accordingly, the real reason that they moved on when they did is because of that contract that the previous front office crew gave him. If his contract was more team-friendly, the Raiders probably would have been able to trade him.
This is just another example of the previous regime making it more difficult for the new regime to build a winning roster. Signing an aging, average backup RB to a three-year deal worth over $11 million never made much sense for the Raiders.
No team wanted to take on a contract for a backup running back with two years remaining. Those two years included substantial money for that role in an offense. It just wasn't worth it for the Raiders or any other team.
Drake ran for 254 yards and two touchdowns on 63 carries in his one season with the Raiders.
