The Las Vegas Raiders are starting yet another new regime. But this time, it's with two guys who have been there, done that. Pete Carroll, the new head coach, won a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks when they beat the Denver Broncos. He went to another one but lost to the New England Patriots.
John Spytek, the new general manager, has scouted and helped develop talent for Super Bowl-winning teams like the Denver Broncos and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a scout and an assistant general manager. So, they guys know what it takes to win. Luckily for the Raiders, they are about to put all of those skills to the test in a few days when the 2025 NFL Draft Combine rolls around.
The combine isn't just about the physical measurables we get to see from these players when they do the drills and workouts. In fact, it's probably more about the interviews the teams get to have with the players. But, for the media and the fans, the combine is a fun chance to get to see these players in action again.
For the Raiders, there are three main positions they need to be watching for during the combine.
Three positions Raiders need to watch at the 2025 NFL Combine
Quarterback
I'm not sure this one needs to be explained a ton. But, for the sake of the article, here we go. The Raiders have had a revolving door at quarterback the last two years. Since they let Derek Carr walk and did the same thing he did to the Raiders and the New Orleans Saints, the Raiders have been in quarterback purgatory—they were when Carr was quarterback, too.
Now they will have a chance at watching some pretty good college quarterbacks, whom they should be trying to draft on Day 1 of the NFL, and maybe even Day 2 and Day 3. The Raiders need to leave the 2025 NFL Draft with a QB. Who, well, we don't know. But, they will get to watch and talk to all of them in just a few days.
Offensive line
If the Raiders are going to have a rookie quarterback under center in 2025, or even if they plan to roll a guy like Aidan O'Connell back out there again, they need to protect the QB better. And, having a dominant offensive line is the key to having QB success. We saw guys like C.J. Stroud take a step back in 2024 because of his offensive line being so poor.
The Philadelphia Eagles showed the recipe for beating the Kansas City Chiefs. It's through the trenches, on offense and defense. The Raiders have to build up their trenches. Luckily, this draft class is deep on both sides of the ball in the trenches. The Raiders need to be watching offensive linemen in this draft because there are a lot of good ones.
Wide receiver
It all comes back to whether the Raiders have a rookie quarterback or not. And, if that is what they plan on doing, or even if they go the veteran route, they need more weapons available to the quarterback. Jakobi Meyers and Brock Bowers simply will not be enough.
This position group will especially need to be watched closely though because it's not that deep. They will need to watch every single detail, talk to the guys they like that fit their scheme, and anything else that they see fit for their combine prep.
2025 could see the Las Vegas Raiders finally making the right choice in the NFL Draft
The Raiders would do that in a heartbeat.
