Why the Las Vegas Raiders should or shouldn't pursue Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford for 2025

The Las Vegas Raiders have been on a long, tumultuous journey of finding their franchise quarterback. And you could argue they haven't had one in a very, very long time. Derek Carr may have been in town for a long time, but he never won a playoff game, and franchise quarterbacks take their team to the postseason and win in the postseason. So, to me, he doesn't meet the criteria of a franchise quarterback.
Now the debate comes on if the Raiders should get their franchise quarterback by way of free agency and snag a veteran guy who's proven. Or, if they should get one in the draft. There's only one thing with the latter, they pick at No. 6, and both of the top two quarterbacks could very well be gone. And, it may be impossible to trade into the top three picks without giving away anything crazy.
On the other hand, signing a veteran guy could backfire in their face. I mean, let's be honest, that's basically what they did the last two years with Jimmy Garoppolo and Gardner Minshew, and we all know how that went.
They have some tough decisions to make. But, some recent news gives them a new avenue of getting the job done.
Rams QB Matthew Stafford able to seek trade
Earlier this week the news dropped that the Los Angeles Rams are letting their star quarterback and Super Bowl-winning quarterback Matthew Stafford, seek a trade. Now, there is a good chance he doesn't get traded at all. But, there is also a chance that he does. And, he will be a hot name in the market.
I'm usually against the "go for a veteran" avenue when it comes to the Raiders, just because it hasn't really worked out at all. But, this is different. This is Matthew Stafford, one of the most talented passers of all time. If the price is right, you absolutely go get him, and then you still draft a young guy to sit behind him for a year or two, and you now have a Jordan Love situation like what the Green Bay Packers did.
It makes too much sense, so, yes, the Raiders should absolutely pursue him. If I'm the Raiders, I'd much rather go after Stafford than former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold.
2025 could see the Las Vegas Raiders finally making the right choice in the NFL Draft
The Raiders would do that in a heartbeat.
