The New Orleans Saints and the entire football community received sad news on Thursday. Historic defensive coordinator Steve Sidwell passed away on Wednesday evening at the age of 78.
Sidwell was the Saints' defensive coordinator from 1986 to 1994 under Jim Mora. Fans will know that his leadership was a major piece of the 'Dome Patrol' defense in New Orleans. During Sidwell's time with the Saints, their defense led the NFL in fewest points allowed twice (1991, 1992) and pass defense (1992, 1993). New Orleans made the postseason for the first four times in franchise history with Sidwell on staff.
He was inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame in 2004.
"For nine years, Steve Sidwell played an integral role in the success of the New Orleans Saints and helped develop several of the franchise's greatest defensive players… The success of these teams and players continue to resonate with our organization and fan base to this day." — Saints owner Gayle Benson
Sidwell's time with the Saints saw some of the best linebacker and front seven play in franchise history. Seven of his players received a total of 18 Pro Bowl selections. All four starting linebackers made the Pro Bowl in 1992. LB Pat swilling won AP NFL Defensive Player of the year in 1991 – when he totaled 17 sacks.
Sidwell also spent time with the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Houston Oilers, and Seattle Seahawks during his NFL coaching career. He will always be remembered by the Saints organization and fan base.
