The Los Angeles Rams announced a roster move Monday that should have come sooner.
After a thrilling Week 17 win over the New York Giants, the Rams elected to waive struggling kicker Lucas Havrisik, the team wrote on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.
Replacing Havrisik is veteran kicker Brett Maher, 34, who was on the team earlier in the year, Adam Schefter reported Monday afternoon.
Havrisik has played with the Rams for a little over half the season. He hasn't been good during his tenure.
He made just 15 of his 20 field goal attempts, going 4-for-9 from 40-plus yards. Havrisik also missed three of his 22 PATs, including two in Sunday’s win over the Giants.
That isn't going to cut it for a team that is looking to run the table in the postseason.
The Rams brought in Mason Crosby to inspire a kicking competition early in December.
Crosby was subsequently cut from the Rams after one game, and it seemed as though the team was confident in Havrisik.
But after Sunday, that confidence waned. Rightfully so.
With Maher, he is a known commodity for Los Angeles. In seven games, Maher made 73.9 percent of his field goal attempts.
It was a downturn from his 2022 season with the Dallas Cowboys, where he knocked in 90 percent of his attempts.
The hope is that he will be the answer to what has been an inconsistent season in a critical aspect of the game.
