It was a familiar feeling for the Rams as they failed to get the job done against the 49ers in Week 2, their 30-23 defeat marking a ninth consecutive regular-season loss to San Francisco.
But there were plenty of bright spots for a young roster in how they competed with one of the best teams in the NFL for four quarters.
The primary bright spot was rookie receiver Puka Nacua, who continued an incredible start to his pro career by making NFL history.
Nacua enjoyed a remarkable day, reeling in 15 of his 20 targets for 147 yards, the 49ers' vaunted defense struggling to find much of an answer for him until the second half.
Added to the 10 catches he made in the Rams' season-opening win over the Seahawks, Nacua now has 25 receptions across his first two NFL games, shattering the record set by 49ers receiver Earl Cooper, who had 19 for San Francisco during the opening two weeks of the 1980 season.
On top of that record, Nacua is the first player in NFL history with at least 10 receptions and 100 yards in each of his first two games.
In the end, Nacua and the Rams could not quite produce enough on offense to keep pace with the 49ers, who pulled away in the second half in large part thanks to two Matthew Stafford interceptions.
But a historic beginning to his NFL journey means Nacua still has plenty to smile about.
