The Los Angeles Rams got a deal across the finish line just in time for their preseason opener this week. News broke on Tuesday of the Rams agreeing to an extension with RB Kyren Williams. This is great news for the Rams, who lock up one of their most underrated players on their roster, but it could make an ongoing problem for an NFL contender even more complicated.
The Rams’ extension of Kyren Williams could have a direct effect on the Bills’ ongoing negotiations with James Cook

If you follow the NFL closely, you likely know about the Buffalo Bills and RB James Cook, who are currently unable to agree on a new deal. The talented young RB has reportedly been seeking $20 million annually after a season where he led the NFL with 16 rushing touchdowns and recorded his second consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season. After this big year, he wants to be compensated, but it’s already August, and still no deal has come together.
Last season, both players appeared in 16 games. Williams recorded 290 more rushing yards on 109 more carries, while Cook averaged 0.8 more yards per carry and scored two more rushing touchdowns. It seems safe to assume their market value as players would be pretty similar. Seeing Williams sign on the dotted line for a deal worth an average of $11 million, significantly less than the $20 million he was hoping for, had to be less than ideal for Cook and his representation. If you are the Bills, you probably loved seeing this deal finalized and hopefully lower the price tag on Cook. The problem, though, is that only helps the team if Cook is willing to play ball with this new knowledge. The Rams’ mindset was, of course, only on retaining their player for the term, but inadvertently, this deal is likely to play a role in how much Cook ultimately earns in his next deal, whether that is with the Bills or elsewhere.
