The Los Angeles Rams’ celebration of their wild-card round win came to a halt on Monday as a concerning update on QB Matthew Stafford was released.

The Rams’ star QB and top MVP candidate suffered a sprained right index finger in the team’s win over the Carolina Panthers. There doesn’t seem to be any significant concern that he could miss the team’s divisional-round matchup, but this is definitely not the news the team wanted to hear after its big win.

Rams head coach Sean McVay announced the extent of the injury to the media on Monday. This instantly becomes the top thing for the Rams to monitor this week. And even though he’s expected to play, there has to be some concern about whether this injury will impact how well he performs this weekend.

Could Matthew Stafford’s injury impact the team’s chances against the Bears

The Rams now know they will travel to take on the Chicago Bears in the NFC Divisional Round. The Bears are better than the Panthers, who the Rams played in the wild-card round. And the Rams clearly struggled, as it was a bit of a back-and-forth affair.

Stafford will need to be on his A-game for the Rams to pick up a second straight road playoff win. The fact that this injury is to the index finger on Stafford’s throwing hand makes it a bit more concerning, as this can affect his ability to handle and throw the ball.

The Rams also have other injuries they will be working through as the week goes on. Making sure they have a good plan for Stafford and the offense will be the top priority, though. I would expect them to test the injury in practice this week and develop a game plan based on the potential limitations or lack thereof that the QB may be dealing with.
