The Los Angeles Rams have not ruled out quarterback Matthew Stafford for the game against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field next Sunday. He didn't practice all week, but is listed as questionable to play.
According to Ian Rapoport, from NFL Network, Stafford is "willing to take it right up to game time," which means they will let the door open for an early return. During his press conference, Rams head coach Sean McVay said on Friday that the swelling on Stafford's thumb has gone down and that his grip on the ball has progressed.
Matthew Stafford suffered an UCL sprain on his thumb. Since 2018, 12 quarterbacks have missed practices the entire week following a thumb injury, and only one played. But that one player is exactly Matthew Stafford, with the Detroit Lions in 2020. He played against the Carolina Panthers on that occasion, but the Lions lost 20-0 — Stafford completed 18 from 33 passes for 178 yards, no picks and no interceptions.
After the Packers game, the Rams have a bye week, followed by a divisional game against the Seattle Seahawks. So if Stafford misses the game on Sunday, he will basically have three weeks to get better.
If Stafford can't go, the Rams starter will be Brett Rypien, who replaced the starting quarterback during the loss to the Dallas Cowboys last week. Stafford and Rypien are the only quarterbacks on the Rams 53-man roster. Earlier this week, they also added undrafted rookie Dresser Winn to the practice squad. Rookie fourth-rounder Stetson Bennett is on the NFI-list.
Injury report
Besides Matthew Stafford, right tackle Rob Havenstein (calf), cornerback Cobie Durant (stinger), Puka Nacua (knee), and defensive end Larrell Murchison (knee) are all questionable to play. Off-ball linebacker Ernest Jones (knee) will not play.
