It may be hard to believe, but there was a world where Matthew Stafford was the QB of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Aaron Rodgers was the quarterback of the Los Angeles Rams.

But things eventually sorted themselves out and the Rams and Stafford were able to come to terms.

But if they didn't, Sean McVay explained how close they came to having Rodgers play in Pacific Blue…

Rams thought about signing Aaron Rodgers

"I think the priority, which was consistently communicated, was, 'hey, let's work something out with Matthew,'" Sean McVay told Kyle Brandt of NFL Network. "We were very fortunate that it worked out that way. If that wasn't able to occur, then that was definitely a conversation and a possibility for us [signing Aaron Rodgers]. I have a ton of respect for the body of work, and I've gotten to know Aaron and really enjoy the conversations and just the approach, the way that he thinks about the game and in life…

"…And so that was a possibility, but our first priority was always to be able to get Matthew back. And what I do feel really fortunate about…I think that we're closer than ever. And I think sometimes when you're able to have real conversations, I think you can appreciate the love that's been built up but also the ability to be honest with one another. And I'm really glad that worked out and I know that there are a lot of people in Pittsburgh who are really excited that that's finally come to fruition. And, you know, I'm a big fan of his [Aaron Rodgers]."

Aaron Rodgers’ preferred destination was far from Pittsburgh. Sources told A to Z Sports that Rodgers badly wanted to play for the Rams given the team’s proximity to his California home and roots. Sources say that Los Angeles had contact with Rodgers and his agent, but told him they would let him know after everything was finalized with Matthew Stafford, who they obviously ended up keeping. So if Rodgers was going to take a mere $10 million total, the Rams certainly would have been the spot.

Instead, he's on to a one year all or nothing deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
