The Los Angeles Rams lost one offensive assistant this week with tight ends coach and passing game coordinator Nick Caley becoming the offensive coordinator of the Houston Texans, but they have succeeded in hanging on to another of Sean McVay's top lieutenants who looked to also be heading to the AFC South.
Passing game specialist Nate Scheelhaase had reportedly been expected to be hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars for their offensive coordinator position.
But NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday that Los Angeles will retain the services of Scheelhaase for at least one more season.
The Jaguars instead hired Grant Udinski, formerly assistant quarterbacks coach and assistant offensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings, to be their OC.
In addition to being a major win for the Rams, Scheelhaase can see sticking in LA as a significant positive.
He would not have been calling the plays under new Jaguars head coach Liam Coen and, with Caley having departed to do so in Houston, he can likely expect to enjoy even greater involvement in the putting together the Rams' offensive gameplans in 2025.
Though there are ingredients in Jacksonville to suggest they could turn things around in 2025, the path to success right now looks more realistic for the Rams coming off a run to the NFC Divisional Round in 2024.
With another strong season for the Rams, who finished 10th in offensive DVOA in 2024, in which he is more involved in the offense, Scheelhaase would likely be in an even stronger position to earn play-calling coordinator or perhaps even head coaching interest in 2026.
Sometimes it's the moves you don't make that can be the most important. The Rams and Scheelhaase will be hoping that, as a result of him staying put, he can help them to glory in 2025 and have more options to consider next offseason.
