It defies most expectations for NFL coaches in a league defined by wins and losses.
But at 6-6, riding a three-game win streak, Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay claims the 2023 season is the most fun he's had coaching. Forget the Super Bowl.
“I think it is [the most fun],” McVay said Monday. "A lot of the perspective is never forgetting how important it is to try to be the person you want to be for the people that you love and care about. And also, be reminded, man, you love this game. You love the opportunity to work with people you care about and the competition of it.”
It runs contrary to conventional thought. So much of sport is explained by climbing the summit and achieving the goal that cements a team in immortality — winning a championship. And don't be fooled — McVay has done that.
The former boy-wonder of the NFL has been to two Super Bowls. He's won one. But maybe it's age. Maybe it is wisdom. Maybe it is reaching the summit and realizing what is worth enjoying is the climb to the top. Whatever it may be, McVay's perspective of fun and meaning in the work of coaching isn't scaled the same as other NFL head coaches.
It is a philosophy on the sport that is built to last.
“It's not exclusive to just loving the wins. It's loving everything that comes with it, responding to the challenges,” McVay said. “I'm loving it because of the people I'm around and the perspective that the experience you're accumulating as a young guy has benefited both good and bad to keep learning and keep growing.
“This game is meant to be enjoyed."

As the Rams have stacked up wins, the playoff picture is only getting more interesting. Currently, Los Angeles sits second in the NFC West.
Being in the hunt for a postseason appearance means beating the Baltimore Ravens in Week 14. It will be a challenge the Rams will need to be ready for as Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is having an MVP-like season.
The Rams will have to unleash the not-so-secret offensive weapon that is running back Kyren Williams. The good news is there are few running backs playing better football in December than he.
Three wins means there is a chance. Four straight wins means McVay and his team have found a sustainable formula. And maybe that formula merely started with having fun.
Kyren Williams Rams’ not-so-secret offensive weapon must be utilized fully against Baltimore
The Los Angeles Rams have a not-so-secret weapon the team must utilize tactfully in the team’s Week 14 matchup with the Baltimore Ravens.
