Stetson Bennett made his return to the NFL, garnering a lot of positive attention as he's made strides since he missed the entirety of his rookie season due to what he's now classified as "mental health" reasons.
Despite this, some question whether or not Bennett will be able to retake the backup position. This is because in addition to all of the uncertainty and comments from members of the Rams that didn't exactly express confidence amid his absence, the Rams also signed journeyman quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
It seems likely the veteran will hold onto the No. 2 spot behind cemented starter Matthew Stafford moving forward, but it should not be out of the question that Bennett could eventually retake that position.
And, perhaps with an impressive performance in camp and as the season progresses, that could even happen this year.
It is already determined that Garoppolo will mis the first two games of the season after he violated the NFL's performance-enhancing substances policy, so Bennett will serve as the team's backup quarterback by default to kick things off.
On top of the logistics, the pure value that Bennett brings to the table should be taken into consideration by itself. After all, he did paint one of the greatest underdog stories in college football history when he went from a lowly rated walk-on to a two-time national champion in the toughest conference one can compete in.
His contract is also something to look at when considering the longer-term outlook. Looking at his rookie contract and how things relate to the upcoming three seasons, it should be noted that Garoppolo carries a cap hit of $3,178,750 in LA.
That is three times the cap hit the former Georgia Bulldog carries. Bennett's rookie contract runs through 2026 and is valued at just over $4.5 million. That is not fully guaranteed.
It's hard to see a scenario in which the Rams cut Garoppolo outright since there's basically no benefit, but depending upon how well Bennett shows out in the preseason (granted he bounces back as well as the way he has been trending), there could be an instance in which the Rams opt to trade Garoppolo sooner rather than later.
It will be interesting to watch if Bennett can once again defy the odds the way he did in Athens as he's once again faced with adversity at the highest level football has to offer.
