Matthew Stafford's situation is getting close to the finish line. The Las Vegas Raiders and the New York Giants have contract offers on the table, and the Los Angeles Rams also consider keeping the veteran quarterback.
If he gets traded, though, investing in Aaron Rodgers to replace Stafford is an option for the Rams under general manager Les Snead and head coach Sean McVay. And The Athletic reported that the Rams were one of the teams interested in Rodgers four years ago.
"The Rams were previously interested in Rodgers ahead of their initial trade for Stafford in 2021, when Rodgers was in his own contract dispute with the Green Bay Packers."
Los Angeles' coaching staff has several connections to Aaron Rodgers. Sean McVay runs a similar version of the system Matt LaFleur runs with the Green Bay Packers, in which Rodgers won his last two MVP awards.
Moreover, LaFleur's brother, Mike, is the Rams' offensive coordinator. Recently, they also hired Alex Van Pelt as a senior offensive assistant. Van Pelt, who spent last season as the New England Patriots offensive coordinator, was Rodgers' quarterbacks coach in Green Bay from 2014 to 2017, and they have a close relationship.
Reportedly, the Rams are Rodgers' preferred destination, and he would be willing to take a lower contract in order to sign with them.
For Los Angeles, it would be an intriguing gamble. They would get draft pick compensation from Stafford's acquiring team and clear $4.333 million in cap space this year and $53.666 million in 2026.
Aaron Rodgers is still under contract with the New York Jets, and he's slated to make $37.5 million, but the team has already announced the intention to release him when the new league year starts on March 12, so Rodgers is permitted to talk to other teams.
