The Miami Dolphins may be hurting after the loss of Jaelan Phillips, but all is not over just yet.
It is always bleak to lose a starting pass-rusher, and while the Dolphins are fortunate to have a talented depth option in Emmanuel Ogbah, they are still a man down. Proven depth would never hurt in a situation like this. Why not look to a Super Bowl champion?
The Eagles waived pass rusher Derek Barnett today, and while it seems unlikely that he would clear waivers, he sure would help the Dolphins in a playoff run.
The Dolphins don't need anyone right now to come in and be a starter to fill the role for Phillips. That much just isn't realistic right now after the trade deadline has passed.
Miami will lean on guys like Ogbah that have been here for some time and have earned a shot at that starting role for this year, but help from a guy like Barnett is far from a bad idea.
Barnett is the pinnacle of what the Dolphins could find right now; a contributor on a Super Bowl team, consistent production when on the field, and quite reliable when healthy.
That "when healthy" might be a bit of a reach based on the past few years, but the upside here is all that the Dolphins should be worried about.
At best, this is a very high-end addition that would serve as an immediate boost to what is already one of the best locker rooms in the league. At worst, the Dolphins don't lose out on much and have to rely on the guys that they have already built up on their roster.
Again, it isn't much of an exact science, but guys that have been there before tend to produce when they get put in those situations. If the Dolphins truly want to make it to the Super Bowl, why not get the guy that has won the whole damn thing?
