Dolphins’ waiver-wire addition brings elite tools and a chance to revive his career in Anthony Weaver’s defense
Miami claims a once promising second-round draft choice from 2023 who is looking to revive his career.
There’s a new cornerback in town for the Miami Dolphins. A day after Miami’s 53-man roster was finalized for the first time for the 2025 season, Miami has seized a waiver claim at the cornerback position, landing a former second-round draft choice from the 2023 NFL Draft.
Miami was awarded Julius “Juju” Brents from the Indianapolis Colts on Wednesday. He will presumably take the roster spot of former second-round pick Cam Smith, who general manager Chris Grier shared would be placed on the “Non-Football Injury” list this week — yet another frustrating development for a draft pick that has yet to show signs of living up to his draft stock.
Brents will be a chance for Miami to find value from someone else’s frustrating investment. It’s not been a matter of talent from the former Kansas State Wildcat.
Miami Dolphins awarded Julius “Juju” Brents off of waivers on Wednesday
“Brents is an interesting case, as he was just about every NFL Draft analyst’s crush during his draft cycle in 2023. His long frame and aggressiveness is a very appealing style of CB but sadly he hasn’t been able to show it in the NFL. He’s only played in 11 or 34 possible games since being drafted due to injuries and the play he demonstrated this preseason was troublesome to say the least.
The upside is still there for him to turn things around though. While Colts fans will hate to see it against the Dolphins Week 1, I’m sure Brents will enjoy the chance to play his former team that has now given up on him. Brents has great character and he did not allow the unfortunate injuries to take away his infectious smile on the practice field during his time in Indianapolis.”

Brents offers a lot of aggression in coverage, which should offer Miami a chance to implement another disruptive press player for when the Dolphins seek to press at the line of scrimmage. Both Anthony Weaver and the Dolphins defensive backs have talked about their intent to disrupt the timing of routes in 2025 amid what is a very talented pass rush room.
But injuries have sapped Brents’ ability to collect reps. He’s played just 565 defensive snaps as an NFL defender and quickly was phased out for Indianapolis amid a coaching staff change that saw a new defensive system brought in for 2025. Now, the 25-year-old cornerback will look to find his footing with the Dolphins and try to reclaim his once promising NFL trajectory in Miami.
