Dolphins continue to stack competition at key positions of need with latest reported signing
A little competition never hurt anyone.
The Miami Dolphins spent much of the afternoon yesterday loading up competition at one of their biggest areas of need. Miami added four defensive backs yesterday in free agency.
Today, they’ve kicked off the action with another signing, this one coming in to add another name to the pile at another one of Miami’s most pressing areas of the roster. The Dolphins are adding a pass rusher to their ranks. Former San Francisco 49ers draft pick Robert Beal Jr. is the latest addition to the Dolphins, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Dolphins agree to terms with pass rusher Robert Beal Jr.
Beal Jr. was a member of the 2023 NFL Draft, playing his college career with the University of Georgia. At the 2023 NFL Combine, Beal posted a blazing 4.48s 40-yard dash at 247 pounds; offering excellent speed and burst to go with over 34.5″ arms. Those traits haven’t helped Beal find production as an NFL player to date, but it does offer Miami more in the way of physical tools and upside to work with as they attempt to kick-start their player development program.
Beal has played 291 career defensive snaps in three seasons, to go along with 394 career snaps on special teams. He’ll join yesterday’s addition, Josh Uche, as a new face alongside former 2024 first-round draft choice Chop Robinson in Miami’s pass rush unit.
Much like the cornerback position, it’s probably safe to assume that Miami isn’t done with their positional overhaul. But at least there are some tools to work with within the building. Miami’s roster was looking quite barren just 72 hours ago at both spots — and while the rooms aren’t especially accomplished by NFL standards, at least both positions on the roster have seen a surge of multiple competitors for playing time when it’s time to put on the pads.
